Jeremiah 23:14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: They commit adultery, and walk in lies: They strengthen also the hands of evildoers,That none doth return from his wickedness:They are all of them unto me as Sodom, And the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
Ntinda, Kampala, Uganda. by Rev. Stephen Parelli. July 14, 2014
On July 13, 2015, in a private (non-public) Kampala four-hour theological peer-training meeting of four Ugandan pastors, carried out by Other Sheep with the support of Other Sheep Africa and Other Sheep Rwanda and the Congo (DRC), and hosted by three Ugandan NGOs, the four pastors concluded that the Biblical usage of the word Sodomite was never used in reference to a sexual orientation (specifically homosexuality) nor to same-sex sex (MSM).
Instead, the pastors, citing Jeremiah 23:14 and noting other Old Testament scripture (from Ezekiel, Isaiah, Lamentations, Amos and Zephaniah), named the church at large and the government in general as the real Sodom and Gomorrah. In a spontaneous discussion centered around the theological and Biblical meaning of “sodomy” and “sodomites,” the pastors, having discovered the Biblical usage of the word “Sodom” by the Old Testament prophets as a Hebrew icon fo corruption and the neglect of the poor and needy, freely applied “sodomy” to Ugandan and Kenyan leaders in places of authority, both in the church and in the government, who because of corruption and the exploitation of the poor and needy are, therefore, the real Biblical Sodomites.
The four pastors, who attended the one-day private theological training on Sodom and Gomorrah, are participants in Other Sheep Bible-based workshops on Biblical studies in sexual minorities and civil liberties. The four pastors, having learned by word of mouth, Bible studies were being conducted, sought out Other Sheep and requested one-on-one Bible training.
The Children Are Free, the text book being used by Other Sheep in its peer-training workshops and small group sessions, is accompanied by a Reading Stagey and Answer Key for focused, comprehensive study of the text book The Children Are Free. Together, these study tools guide pastors and other serious students of the Bible, through a study course on what the Bible does and does not say about same-sex relationships.
The July 13 peer-training session with pastors covered the book’s introduction, the lay out of the book (especially observing the endnotes), and the Genesis 19 study on Sodom and Gomorrah, one of the many lessons on what the Bible does and does not say from the text book The Children Are Free.
Two major, public, half-day theological workshops, registered in advance with the police in accordance with governmental procedures, and organized by Ugandan NGOs in association with Other Sheep, were conducted in Mpigi and Masaka with Anglicnas in Anglican dioceses on July 10 and 11, respectively.
The NGOs, which have invited and organized Other Sheep’s teaching ministries in Uganda, have printed and are distributing a total of 4,000 copies of the book The Children Are Free in Luganda and English to interested parties.
