Victor Mukasa (Uganda) was in New
York City for an ILGHRC retreat.  In an
email to Steve Parelli he had told him
that the one site he especially wanted to
see while in New York was
The
Stonewall Inn
.

On his (VIctor's) last day in New York
City, Emmanuel Kamau, Kenyan, and
Davis Mac-Iyalla, Nigerian, who had both
arrived only hours earlier, and were
staying with Steve and Jose, joined
Victorfor the day.   Steve and Jose
served as  their guide.

They talked about the force of the
church in Africa as the primary
cause of homophobia.  They
talked about the book
The
Children Are Free
and the dire
need for copies of the book to be
distributed in Africa.

    Victor commented: The
    human rights
    organizations miss this
    part.  Where are they in
    equipping us to address
the church.  And it is the
    church that is the primary
    cause of homophobia.
An unplanned trip to Steve and Jose's apartment in the Bronx . . .
and then on to JFK Airport where Victor caught her flight.

apartment, Emmaneul,
Davis and Victor talk
about
The Blue Book
(top three photos).

Steve and Jose had
used
The Blue Book
successfully in Nairobi,
Kenya, to start a PFLAG.
The content of
The Blue
Book
is in an easy to
use Q&A format . . .
important questions that
all parents, family and
friends ask and seek
answers to.
Outside Steve and Jose's
apartment, Emmanuel,
Victor and Davis display
the book
The Children Are
Free.

Last August (2007), as
Steve and Jose were
arriving in Uganda,
religious leaders were
organizing for a public
street demonstration
against LGBT people.
SMUG (Sexual Minorities
Uganda) asked Other
Sheep (Steve and Jose) to
give an on-the-spot
workshop on what the
Bible does and does not
say about homosexuality.

In turn, the book
The
Children Are Free
meets a
felt need in Uganda, a
country where the
evangelical faith is
predominate.

It's been just a year
(Feb. 2007) since
Emmanuel
(Kenya) has
been living in Texas

(USA)
seeking asylum.
How happy he was to
have spent a few hours
with fellow activist
Victor, his friend from
Kenya's neighbouring
country to the east,
Uganda.
