After touring Liberty Island
with Aunty Ivy, we came to
this reading pictured here.
Prior to arriving at this
point, and while walking
together with Aunty Ivy, I
had remarked that I had
visited this island many
times with my children and
with visiting friends while I
was pastoring in New
Jersey, and that the
present skyline was
difficult to view. In a way, it
was a representation of
my own life after my
coming out to family
members and evangelical
friends. The one-time
significant people of my
life are gone from me
forever - like the fallen
Towers that no long stand
as the city's immutable
icons.  Then we came
upon this photo of the
pre 9-11 Manhattan skyline.  My heart broke and I cried and sobbed and Aunty
Ivy gave me his shoulder and held me.  Afterwards I reflected:  I had cried for
the hurt that all humanity suffers when ignorance and bias becomes hatred
and violence toward others who are different. A hatred and violence that at
times is manifested physically, but can also be manifested in ways that are
spiritually, emotionally and socially abusive.

The Great Registry Hall.
Steve's paternal great grandfather (Italian)
came through this hall 100 years ago (ca.
1905).  He did so of his own choosing.
Emmanuel's people arrived here 200-250
years earlier.  His people came by force.  It
was called  the English Slave trade.

After Ellis Island,  Emmanuel and Steve returned by ferry to  lower
Manhattan.  While walking to the subway through
Battery Park they
happened to see the object pictured at left.  Steve paused.  He
recognized it.
"The Sphere."  At one time, this object stood in the plaza
between the Twin Towers.
On Sunday, September 9, 2001,
Jose Ortiz and Steve Parelli roller
bladed along the Hudson River from
Christopher Street to
the plaza of the
Twin Towers
.  There, late at night,
without a soul present,  they roller
bladed again and again around
"The
Sphere."
 A secuity guard appeared
and told them roller blading in the
plaza was prohibited.  In the still
night,
between the Towers, they sat
down to replace their roller blades
with the sneakers they carried
around their waists.  It had been a
great day.  Feeling invigerated, fit and
full of life, they walked out of the plaza
and headed home . . . to Tuesday
morning,
September 9-11.
